Get to know Joe Verrill:
What is your story Joe?
My story is I am originally from Indiana, I served 5 ½ years in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. I currently work at the ER at the Naval Hospital as an LVN/Health technician. Next spring I’ll finish my degree in nursing and plan on continuing my education by becoming a PA. I’m married and met my wife in the navy and we have 2 kiddos, my daughter Adrianna and son Alonzo.
What was your fitness and health like before CrossFit?
I was a person who thought I was in good shape because I lifted weights and did some cardio while in the Navy. I was humbled when I got my butt kicked doing the Tough Mudder mud run and decided that I was actually in terrible shape. I had gone up to 248 pounds and couldn’t run 3 miles straight to save my life!
How did you get introduced to CrossFit?
I had been curious about Crossfit and saw the games on TV and thought that it would be something I would enjoy. I was looking for something to challenge me and raise my fitness level. It was crazy hard at first, and Desi almost killed me during fundamentals, but crossfit is now my favorite thing to do.
How has CrossFit improved your health and fitness?
My one year anniversary was this May. Before crossfit I had high blood pressure and was on medication for high cholesterol. Now I have perfect blood pressure and am completely off cholesterol meds. If I could go back I would tell myself to start crossfit sooner.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at CrossFit SoCal?
When I’m not at the gym I like to spend my time with my kids and hiking with my daughter.
What is your favorite workout?
My favorite workout is Grace because I love to clean, and I hate thrusters because, well…everyone hates thrusters!
What have you done to prepare for your competition this weekend?
To get ready for the competition I have been practicing the WOD’s for the LCI, and getting great tips and ideas from Greg, Wilson, and Johan. I also did a lot of training with Ady, who always kicks my ass. I feel nervous and excited about the LCI, I know that I’ve trained hard for it and will be ready to represent SocaI on Saturday.
(JOE WILL BE COMPETING IN THE LEFT COAST INVITATIONAL THIS SATURDAY AUGUST 17TH AT SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY. CHECK OUT THE WEBSITE theleftcoastinvitational.com/ FOR DETAILS.)
